SJD 201: Christian Social Justice and Community Development
SJD QUESTIONS:
Question 1: Community-Based Questions:
Your church is in a rural community where the only water source is a well that was built ten years ago by a foreign NGO. The well is now broken. People walk three kilometers to another village for water. The local government says they have no money to fix it. Some men in the community have started charging people to use their private wells, but many families cannot afford it. Using Module 4 (Poverty and Economic Justice) and Module 6 (Community Organizing), what steps would you take? How would you involve the community rather than doing everything yourself? What partnerships would you seek?
QUESTION 2: Interfaith-Based Questions:
The traditional festival in your town is coming up. It includes animal sacrifices at the shrine, drumming, dancing, and feasting. The chief has asked all religious leaders to bless the festival. Your church members are divided: some say Christians should have nothing to do with it; others say it is "just culture." The youth want to go for the food and fun. Using Module 1 (Biblical Justice) and Module 3 (Power and Privilege), what would you do? What would you teach your church? How would you engage with the chief and other religious leaders?
Question 3: Family-Based Questions:
A widow in your church lost her husband two years ago. Her husband's family took the land and the house, saying she belongs to them now. She and her four children are living in a small room and struggling. The children often go hungry. She tried to report to the village chief, but the chief is her husband's uncle. She now comes to you for help. Using Module 4 (Economic Justice) and Module 8 (Designing Ministries), develop a response. What immediate help would you give? What long-term plan would you create? How would you address the cultural and legal issues?
